Energy Up Program
Energy Up! is a groundbreaking educational and fitness empowerment program that helps children change the way they view food, motivates them to adopt healthier lifestyles, and boosts their self-esteem. Its mission is to fight teenage obesity and prevent diabetes, along with other diseases associated with poor nutrition. The program’s results (documented in medical studies) have been remarkable: Participants have lost weight, gained self-esteem, and improved their emotional and social development.
Energy Up! was founded in 2001 by top lifestyle and fitness guru Kathie Dolgin, known as High Voltage, who adapted the healthy eating, exercise, and life lesson techniques she had been teaching to high-powered people across the world into a program uniquely designed for children. The program was first introduced at the Mother Cabrini High School in Fort Washington, New York, and since then has expanded to other schools. It is also available online to children and teens around the world.
Energy Up! is administered by EUVA, Inc. (Energy Up! Voltage Approved), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The program is accredited by the New York City Board of Education.
Energy Up! was founded in 2001 by top lifestyle and fitness guru Kathie Dolgin, known as High Voltage (for bio click here), and was first introduced at the Mother Cabrini High School in Fort Washington, New York. The program began as a month trial program, then turned into a three-month program, and resulted into the popular permanent fixture at the school it is today.
In 2004, EUVA, Inc, (Energy Up! Voltage Approved) was formed as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit umbrella organization for the program. In the same year, the program was accredited by the New York City Board of Education and also partnered with The Young Women’s Leadership Foundation Schools, bringing the program to Girls Leadership Academies in East Harlem and the Bronx.
Today the program continues to expand, and is offered online to children and teens around the world.
Energy Up! breaks the mold of obesity prevention programs. It views overeating as an addiction problem, understanding that the same neurological pathways that come in to play with other addictions are also triggered by binge-eating, and so uses similar techniques to fight the overeating addiction.
The program empowers teenagers to change their behavior by teaching them fitness, nutrition, and health skills that promote their positive physical, mental, emotional, and social development. This model is unlike most other programs, which simply teach children about fattening foods and the importance of exercise, but ignore the causes behind unhealthy eating. An additional important part of the program is its focus on building the self-esteem of participants, recognizing that low self-esteem is a cause, rather than effect, of obesity.
Energy Up! is especially important because of the obesity epidemic in the U.S. today. The percentage of overweight children between the ages of 9 and 12 has tripled over the last 30 years. Today, one in three children born in the U.S. are expected to be afflicted with Type 2 diabetes at some point during their lifetime. These problems continue into adulthood.
If a faulty diet and inactivity are the main culprits causing Type 2 diabetes and other nutritional diseases (including high Blood Pressure/Hypertension and High Cholesterol, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Respiratory Problems, Orthopedic Problems, and Skin Problems), then a change in lifestyle habits can delay and possibly prevent it.
Results and Credentials
In an independent medical study conducted by physicians at Columbia University (with findings accepted and presented at the 2005 meeting of the Pediatric Societies in Washington, DC, and published in the May 2007 Journal of Adolescent Health), participants in the program lost a significant amount of weight. (Importantly, obese girls lost the most weight, while normal weight girls gained what was expected for their age.
Energy Up! is accredited by the New York City Board of Education to provide physical education credits.
